Building A Homemade Dog Wheel Chair

It can be very difficult to keep a handicapped dog healthy without proper exercise. Without a dog wheelchair, many owners simply give up and have their pet euthanized years before it should be necessary.

Soldering Equipment

A major obstacle for dog owners is the expense of buying a dog wheelchair. If you are in that position, consider building (or finding a sympathetic individual to help you build) a homemade dog wheel chair. Even a large one can be constructed much cheaper than commercial kinds, especially if you can scrounge rather than buy the materials.

Soldering Equipment

For small dogs, a PVC frame can be built very easily. A strong, water resistant fabric can act as the support. PVC is very inexpensive and the amount of fabric you need does not cost much either. Your biggest expense will be the wheels. One recommendation is threaded, plastic caster wheels

For larger dogs, most frame designs have you construct a wheelchair using either wood or metal (usually aluminum). There is one design we ran across, however, that modifies a used human wheelchair, available relatively inexpensively at some thrift or medical supply stores.

To make either a wooden or metal homemade dog wheel chair, you will need a measuring tape, saw and power drill at a minimum. In addition, some metal designs call for soldering equipment. It is best to drill holes and use nuts and bolts to fasten pieces together. Add extra holes to allow for adjustments.

The supporting material for large dogs having problems with either their front or back legs usually consists of heavily padded webbing straps or brake wire suspended from the frame. Straps are often adjustable with buckles and sliders.

For a dog that needs support for all four legs, a sling made of canvas or other strong material is attached to the frame. It may be best to use safety pins to fasten this material prior to making the final adjustments and sewing them together. In all cases, the design should be such that the dog can go to the bathroom without dirtying the materials.

Wheels off an old bicycle, jogging stroller or human wheelchair are often used for larger dog wheelchairs. If the dog will be turning sharp corners, the axles can be set at an angle so the wheels lean inward a little to make it more stable. Wide, knobby tires will handle rougher terrain better than skinny ones. Thinner, lighter tires require less effort when your handicapped dog runs on asphalt or concrete.

Once you have finished building your homemade dog wheel chair it will be time to fine tune the adjustments. Watch your dog during movement for signs of misalignment and discomfort. Check for chafing from the supports.

Be patient while your dog gets used to this new contraption that follows him around!

Life As a Boy - Erections

When you're a boy, erections are both welcomed and feared simultaneously. By the time a boy gets to be a legal adult, this physical phenomenon isn't too mysterious, but for a young, impressionable and hormone-flooded youngster, it seems like the penis can have a life of its own, and that life seems to be determined to humiliate the lad as much as possible.

Soldering Equipment

Are Testicles Necessary?

Soldering Equipment

Testicles do not descend outwardly until a boy is entering puberty, so there is a common misconception that the youngster is incapable of getting an erection until then. Although testicles are necessary for the production of sperm, they are not necessary for an erection, which is caused by sudden blood flow to the penis.

Studies have shown that, even while still in the womb, a boy erection is a regular event. Even after birth, baby boys often startle diaper-changers with their erections. This is perfectly normal and doesn't mean the baby is sexually precocious. As any man will grudgingly tell you, you don't have to be sexually aroused in order to get an erection.

Peer Pressure

While growing up, children generally like to be considered as a normal kid. Anything that makes them look strange is usually ridiculed by other kids. Also, because the boy is young and not used to dealing with public embarrassment, being teased can be a very intense time. A boy erection in gym class or in public is a more often occurring event than an individual boy may think and usually happens to any man.

Anything that causes a sudden rush of blood to fill up the vessels in the penis will cause an erection. Physical exercise or even taking a shower can trigger the process. Unlike girls, which are usually shielded from being naked in front of other girls, boys often have to take communal showers and, through the use of the public urinal, have to expose themselves to some extent. This makes a boy more open to ridicule for a physical reason.

What's Normal?

Because of many social taboos on talking about boy erections in public, young boys can often feel as if they are somehow cured or abnormal for getting an erection at an inopportune moment. There does tend to be a big fear that somehow they are sick, diseased or somehow abnormal. Well, it is perfectly normal to think you or your genitalia are abnormal.

There doesn't seem to be a normal amount of times that a boy should get an erection in a usual day or night. What's normal for you is not necessarily going to be normal for anybody else. The only times a boy needs to consult a doctor are when the erections are somehow very painful or if he discovers a lump on his genitals.

Love, Sex, and The Teenage Brain

Teen romance and the possibility of sex...It is one of the trickiest and difficult topics that we, as parents, talk to our kids about. Making sure your teenager has good information and a healthy attitude about opposite sex relationships is a challenging parental responsibility. We know that our teenagers are going to parties, hanging out together, sometimes drinking and some are having sex.

Soldering Equipment

According to a 2005 Statistics Canada report:

Soldering Equipment

o About 12% of teens have had sexual intercourse by age 15 and by the time they reach the age of 17, 28% teens have. By age 24, 80% of young adults have had sexual intercourse.
o Of the sexually active youth between age 15 and 24, over one third of them had more than one partner in a year and 30% did not use a condom the last time they had intercourse.
o Teen pregnancy has been steadily decreasing over the past 25 years. However the number of teens who have contracted sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as Chlamydia remains on the rise. This points to reduced use of condoms or the prevalence of oral sex which many teens mistakenly believe eliminates the transmission of STDs.

So, as parents, what sort of influence do we have? According to a 2005 University of Regina in Saskatchewan study, teachers emerged as the most important source for information about pregnancy and STD prevention. The study also found that peer influence was more important than parental disapproval in predicting whether a student would have intercourse. The findings suggest that, teachers and peers are more important in providing good information and instilling attitudes to our teenagers than parents. Parental disapproval has little impact. In fact parental disapproval often has the opposite effect one is trying to accomplish.

Romance and the Teenage Brain

The conflict between young love and parental disapproval is not a new one. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette, his "star crossed lovers" showed what havoc teen romance can have on families. Today, perhaps it is understandable and acceptable for school to be a more important source of information than parents on certain information about sex. However, most of us hope our values are important to our children and help guide their sexual behaviour choices.

When your son or daughter has fallen in love the personality change may seem extreme. It like they have been invaded by an alien body snatcher. The power of teen love and sex is very strong. Many parents feel responsible for their teenager's risky behavior and become overwhelmed with feelings of guilt. Parents and especially mothers often feel the judgment of other parents whose teen's behaviour is less extreme This can lead to additional feelings of isolation and ineffectiveness. Some parents and especially fathers may get authoritative out of frustration and eventually give up or "wash their hands" of the problem out of feelings of ineptitude.

To be more influential it helps to equipped with the knowledge of what forces are at work when a teenager falls in love. It is important to understand how the teen brain works. Recent brain scientific research sheds much more light on how much hormonal activity is influencing our teenager's thoughts and actions.

Brain structures and brain chemicals both affect the way an adolescent first dives into romance. In his book Why Do They Act That Way?: A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen, David Walsh describes it this way. At around age ten, the body produces androgen hormones. This is when the first crush can occur. It is at puberty when the real awakening of sexual interest and sex drive occurs. This is when "falling in love" can happen. The hypothalamus drives surges of testosterone in both boys and girls and raises the levels of dopamine - the hormone that is responsible for feelings of pleasure. Because of developmental differences, boys and girls have different attitudes toward sex and romance. The testosterone surges in boys lead them to see girls as sexual objects. Adolescent girls tend to be more drawn to boys for the relational aspects of spending time together and talking.

Although sexual interest is always part of falling in love, falling in love is not always part of sex drive. The prefrontal cortex (the place of reason and judgment in the brain) is inactive and in teenagers not yet fully developed. When falling in love, we aren't using our rational brain and impulse control. A "pleasure" high comes from the hormonal interplay of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. It is a powerful mix of natural neurological "chemistry". All this high level of hormonal fireworks cannot be sustained for a long time by the brain. The intense feelings of "falling in love" are even shorter for teenagers than adults. Infatuation lasts only about three months on average. Following this they will move on to another relationship for the intoxication and excitement or will stay as the relationship transitions into a calmer more comfortable stable state, which has been called "standing in love".

During the "standing in love" phase cooling down occurs and the prefrontal cortex engages. The teen is in a better position to assess the suitability of the relationship. The adolescent may wonder, "Why am I in this relationship?" A different set of hormones are released now. For girls it is oxytocin sometimes referred to as the "cuddling" hormone, also involved at childbirth, which promotes attachment. In boys, the hormone vasopressin makes them more protective, faithful and attentive to their partner's needs.

Romantic Pitfalls

Often parents worry about their child falling in love with a "bad apple". Concern about a teenager's judgment is warranted. The prefrontal cortex is not completing formed in the brain until age 21. In this stupor of love, the bad influence of the boyfriend or girlfriend leads the "good" child to do things quite out of character. For example they may engage in some risky behavior out of loyalty and love such as destroy property for the "rush" of it.

Sometimes the darker side of love of jealousy and possessiveness takes hold. It is confusing for many teenagers. After the glorious "falling in love" feelings and then attachment hormones can cloud the judgement. He can become controlling, or physically or sexually abusive. When the "why am I in this relationship? question comes to mind, her memories of the "falling in love" times and the current cuddling hormone and lack of experience make it more difficult to see the wisdom of getting out.

Tips for Talking to Teens about Sex

Countries with low rates of teen pregnancy and STDs deal with sex more openly. If trusted adults, teachers and parents don't talk openly, the adolescents will get their information from peers or the media. It is important to distinguish sex from sexuality. Sex is about biology whereas sexuality is about biology, psychology, values and spirituality. It is important for you to see your role as supplementing the logic, wisdom and judgement that the teen's under developed prefrontal cortex requires. Actively listening, validating feelings and show respect will help open up discussions and reduce power struggles.

David Walsh in his book Why Do They Act That Way?, suggests the following tips and do's and don'ts.
1. Get motivated. If you do not talk to them someone else will.
2. Get educated. Being informed overcomes nervousness and builds confidence
3. Get comfortable. It is ok to admit some discomfort. It will help everyone relax.
4. Make it an ongoing conversation.
5. Don't try to cover too much in one discussion.
6. Choose appropriate times when there is an opportunity for calm, private uninterrupted conversation
7. Discuss sexuality, not just sex. They need to know about the place of sex in a healthy relationship.
8. Discuss dating as a time to have fun and get to know each other.
9. Don't preach or lecture.
10. Make it a dialogue
11. Share your values

Do

o Emphasize the importance of respect and honesty in all relationships
o Have regular conversations with your sons and daughters about sex and sexuality
o Communicate the values you consider important in romantic relationships
o Provide accurate information about birth control and STDs
o Get to know your adolescent's friends so you know who they are influenced by
o Really listen to your teen: their fears, and worries and validate their feelings showing acceptance and love
o Talk to other parents, join a parents group, see a counselor for ideas and support

Don't

o Don't get angry or use put-downs about a boyfriend or girlfriend you have concerns about
o Don't ridicule or make fun of crushes or romantic attachments
o Don't assume that your son or daughter won't engage in sexual behavior
o Don't keep quiet and let the "instant sex" that happens on TV and in movies become the only examples your kids

have about sex and sexuality

How to Install an Amp

How to install an Amplifier:

Soldering Equipment

1.) Disconnect the battery terminals: Just be safe. Do this.

Soldering Equipment

2.) Run the power cable from the battery to the location of the amp or distribution block. (To read more about running wires, click here)

If you run it through any sort of sheet metal, be sure to protect the power cable with a rubber grommet, or some other protective device.

Be sure you have plenty of slack at both ends of the cable. This will make your life easier, trust me!

Be sure you run the power cable away from any RCA cables. I usually run the power cable down the side of the vehicle that the battery is installed on, and run the RCA cables down the center of the vehicle.

Once the cable has been run and secured, leave it alone for the time being. Don't hook it up, cut it or do anything else with it!

Be sure the power cable is secured with wire ties or some other means, BUT! Not until you have run the cable, and determined that the cable is going to work out where it is located.

3.) Find a suitable ground point close to the amplifier

This point should attach to the vehicle's chassis, and be a solid connection.

Run your ground cable from the amp (or distro block).

Just like with the power cable, this wire should be secured and protected. It should not be installed in a location that will distress it.

Use a piece of sandpaper to remove any paint or finish from your ground point. Use it to also sand away any rust or residue on your ground point. You want a good solid connection, so you'll want to see nice shiny metal.

Prepare an appropriately sized ring terminal

If your ground cable is going to be attached with a ring terminal (the most recommended means), attach it now. Remember! Do a good job here. We're looking for a strong, solid electrical connection. If you can use solder, I would recommend it!

Use a washer when attaching your ring terminal to your vehicle's chassis.

Finally, cover the ground point with something non-conductive. Also, Find some spray paint or finish that will protect your ground point from rust.

4.) Be sure to run RCA cables and the remote turn on!

Pull your head unit out of its mounting location.

If it's not already hooked up, hook up your remote turn-on wire to the head unit's wiring harness.

Determine which RCA cables will go to each channel on your amp(s). I find it useful to have a 4-channel cable and an additional 2-channel cable for your subwoofers. This makes it easier to run all of the wires at once.

Run your RCAs and remote turn-on. Keep the RCA cables away from any sort of power cable, especially the power cable for your amp(s). It's OK to run the remote turn-on wire with the RCAs.

Make sure all cables are secured and not installed in a way that will distress them. Be sure they aren't pinched, scraped or kinked during any sort of driving activity. In any places where they'll need protection, be sure to cover them with a tough material.

5.) Run all of your speaker wires.

Now it's time to run more wires! Run speaker wires from your speakers to your amp's installation location.

Just like with all of the different wires above, be sure they are secured and protected.

6.) Hook up all of the wires at the amplifier!

Hook up the RCAs, speaker cables, remote turn on, power then ground.

7.) Hook up a fuse holder near the battery.

Be sure you have this piece of equipment (and a fuse) before you even attempt to hook your amp up to your vehicle's electrical system. Seriously!

The fuse holder MUST be within 18" of the battery.

Be sure the fuse holder is connected solidly to the power wire.

Be sure you have the right sized fuse!

Be sure the fuse holder is mounted in a safe place, and the power wires are all secured away from any moving parts.

8.) Hook up any special battery terminals

If you have any fancy-schmancy battery terminals, now is the time to be sure they're connected properly. Be sure they are secure and protected. Hook up any other of your vehicle's cables to the battery. If you can get covers for your new battery terminals, I would recommend them.

9.) Reconnect the battery.

Put your shiny new terminals on those battery posts!

10.) Test!

Before turning your system on, turn the amplifier gains all the way down. Turn on your system and listen. Does everything work? How much noise do you hear? Is there audible distortion (If so, don't listen for long!) If everything's square, move on to the next step!

11.) Permanately Mount your amplifier

I hope that before you have gone through the previous nine steps, you have thought about how your amp fits into your system, and how you plan to install it. If not, I BEG OF YOU to think about this first. Figure out where you want your amp, how you'll get power to it, and what (if any) components will be installed near it. Also, don't be a fool! Be sure you've budgeted so you can actually afford everything you need for your amp to be installed FLAWLESSLY. Taking just a small amount of time to think about this stuff will pay off for a smooth install, and great sound. If you don't plan, you will screw it up.

When you mount your amp, you'll want to be sure you are protecting it from any sort of physical damage and heat. Car amps are tough, but you need to be sure that you are installing it in a way that protects your amp from these hazards.

Soooooo, to protect your amp from physical damage (because they are usually installed in places where they are prone to damage such as in the trunk or under the seats), it is best to build some sort of enclosure for it. This enclosure should be big enough to contain the amp (and possibly some fans), as well as the appropriate wiring. You will also want to be able to easily access the controls. If you really like to tweak your system, you might want to make your amp rack easily removable, but also keep theft in mind. Be creative on how to protect it. The truth is, you can get really fancy here, or just do something quick. Both will work.

Another thing to keep in mind when building an enclosure for an amp or mounting the amp in a place that is hot or has poor airflow is that the amp will get HOT. Heat damages electronics, so you should figure out a way to keep your amp cool and happy. Use fans, or even redirect the air conditioner!

One last thing about amps: I have found that if your amp is mounted to metal, it is sometimes prone to noise. I recommend mounting your amp to a piece of wood before installing it. This will prevent any sort or weird ground loop effects that introduce noise to your music.

12.) Tweak!

Now that you've installed your amp(s), you're pretty excited to get rollin. Step 1: Be sure all of the amp's gains are down, the bass boost is off, and the crossovers are set to the correct frequency band.

Get one of your favorite CDs, preferably one that is clean sounding. I have found classical and jazz to work great, but alternative and pop work as well. Try to avoid really loud or bass heavy music. If you must, try to use a more melodic CD: Not one that's just all bass, or noise, you know? The important thing is that the CD is representative of what you normally listen to, because it's YOUR system, and it's YOUR music. Darn tootin!

Step 2: Power on!

Step 3: Turn your head units controls to neutral. EQs off, loudness off, fade and balance centered.

Step 4: Turn the volume up until you hear distortion (you know it when you hear it, and go on to step 5), or the volume control is all the way up. (go to step 6)

Step 5: If you hear distortion, back the volume up until no more distortion is heard. At this point, you know how loud your system is gonna go before it starts distorting, sounding horrible, and smoking speakers. (Move on to step 7, and lower your volume!)

Step 6: If your head unit goes all the way up, and doesn't distort, you have a good unit that your amp can handle. Go to your amp, and while the music is playing, slowly turn up the gains. Once you hear distortion, back off a little. Turn your head unit's volume down!

Step 7: Now go to your head unit. Set all of the eq, loudness, crossover controls, and dsp that you want. Repeat steps 4-6 with all of these controls set to how you want them.

Step 8: Set all of your amp's bass boost or other controls to how you want them. Repeat steps 4-6 again.

Step 9: Once everything sounds good, you're ready to put a cover on your amp enclosure, and be sure your fans are hooked up properly. Put it away and forget it!

Step 10: You're in business! Have fun, and don't wake up your neighbors!
